Grächen

Grächen is a mountain village in the Swiss canton of Valais, perched on a sunny plateau at around 1,617 metres above sea level in the Mattertal valley, not far from Saint-Niklaus and Zermatt. The resort is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and exceptional sunshine, thanks to its position on a natural balcony overlooking the valley. In summer, it serves as a popular base for hiking, with a network of trails linking the surrounding alpine pastures to the Hannigalp area, reachable by cable car, offering views of the Mischabel and Weisshorn ranges. Mountain biking and climbing are also popular pursuits here. In winter, Grächen offers a modest but family- and beginner-friendly ski area, with slopes connected to the Hannigalp sector. The village has retained traditional Valais architecture, featuring wooden chalets and typical granaries on stilts. The clean mountain air and relatively quiet setting, less crowded than nearby Zermatt, make it a favoured destination for restful stays centred on nature and outdoor activities.
