Frutigen

Frutigen is a village in the canton of Bern, located in the Bernese Oberland at the foot of the Lötschberg massif and along the Kander river. The village is particularly known for the Tropenhaus, an unusual tropical greenhouse that uses warm water from the Lötschberg Base Tunnel to grow exotic plants and farm sturgeon, producing Swiss caviar. Frutigen also serves as a gateway to Kandersteg and the wider Lötschberg region, popular for mountain activities. The remains of Tellenburg Castle can still be seen, offering a glimpse into the valley's mediaeval past. The area's alpine setting is well suited to hiking in summer and winter sports in the colder months, with convenient access to nearby ski areas such as Elsigenalp. The village retains a distinctly rural character typical of the Bernese Oberland, with traditional chalets and ongoing farming activity. Its railway station, on the Lötschberg line, also makes it a practical stopover between the Swiss Plateau and Valais.
