Francavilla al Mare

Francavilla al Mare is a seaside town in Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, on the Adriatic coast just a few kilometres from Pescara. It is known for its fine sandy beach and long palm-lined promenade, popular for swimming and leisurely walks. The town has strong links to the writer Gabriele D'Annunzio, who spent time here and drew inspiration for some of his works, as well as to the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, whose villa hosted an influential artistic circle in the late 19th century. The local religious architecture includes a modern church designed by the Tuscan architect Giovanni Michelucci, a notable example of 20th-century Italian design. The older upper part of town offers a quieter contrast to the lively seafront area in summer. Local cuisine highlights Adriatic seafood, with dishes typical of the Abruzzo coast featuring fish and shellfish. Conveniently close to Pescara Airport, Francavilla al Mare makes a practical base for exploring both the coastline and the Abruzzo hinterland.
