Vasto

Vasto is a coastal town in Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, perched on a promontory overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The historic centre sits high above Marina di Vasto, the seafront district below that features long stretches of fine sandy beach. Notable sights in the old town include Palazzo d'Avalos, a Renaissance residence now housing municipal collections, and the Loggia Amblingh, a panoramic terrace offering sweeping views over the coastline and sea. The Cathedral of San Giuseppe and the remains of Caldoro Castle add further historical interest. Local cuisine centres on seafood, particularly brodetto alla vastese, a traditional Abruzzese fish stew. Nearby, the Punta Aderci nature reserve protects a stretch of unspoilt coastline popular for its coastal paths and secluded coves. Vasto also lies close to the Costa dei Trabocchi, known for its historic wooden fishing platforms built on stilts. Altogether, the town makes a good base for combining cultural heritage, beach time and Adriatic gastronomy.
