Ortona

Ortona is a coastal town in Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, Italy, set on the Adriatic Sea. Built on a rocky headland, its historic centre is dominated by the Aragonese Castle, a 15th-century fortress overlooking the coastline, and by the Cathedral of San Tommaso Apostolo, which houses the relics of the Apostle Thomas. The town has an active harbour combining commercial, fishing and leisure boating activity, which remains central to local life. Ortona was the site of significant fighting in December 1943, during the Second World War, an episode still commemorated by several memorials around the town. The surrounding countryside is known for its wine-growing tradition, particularly Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, produced in the nearby hills. The stretch of coast close by, known as the Costa dei Trabocchi, is notable for its old wooden fishing structures built on stilts, distinctive to this part of the Adriatic. With a Mediterranean climate, sandy and pebble beaches, and easy access to the Abruzzo hinterland, Ortona suits both seaside stays and inland excursions.
