Roccaraso

Roccaraso is a mountain town in the Abruzzo region, in the province of L'Aquila, set on the Cinquemiglia plateau at over 1,200 metres above sea level. It is one of the leading ski resorts in central-southern Italy, thanks in particular to the Aremogna ski area, which offers downhill and cross-country skiing as well as facilities for snowboarding. During winter, the town draws visitors from Rome, Naples and surrounding regions, owing to its relatively easy access from these major cities. Outside the ski season, Roccaraso becomes a popular base for hiking and mountain biking, set within a mountainous landscape of forests and peaks rising above 2,000 metres. The town lies close to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity. The historic centre, rebuilt after the Second World War, retains a scattering of narrow streets and traditional shops. Local gastronomy highlights mountain produce such as cheeses, cured meats and dishes featuring mushrooms and truffles, reflecting the wider culinary traditions of the Abruzzo region.
