Montreux

Montreux lies on the shores of Lake Geneva, at the foot of the Vaud Alps, benefiting from a notably mild microclimate that allows palm trees and Mediterranean-style gardens to thrive along its well-known lakeside promenade. The town is best known for hosting the Montreux Jazz Festival each summer since 1967, drawing visitors from around the world. Nearby stands Chillon Castle, a medieval fortress built on a rocky islet, one of Switzerland's most visited historical monuments. Montreux is also associated with Freddie Mercury, commemorated by a statue on the lakeside promenade. The surrounding area offers plenty of walking opportunities towards the terraced vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as excursions to nearby peaks reachable by cogwheel train, including Rochers-de-Naye. Montreux railway station also serves as a starting point for the renowned GoldenPass Line.
