Olivone

Olivone is a village in the Blenio valley, in the canton of Ticino, sitting at around 890 metres above sea level at the foot of the Lucomagno (Lukmanier) Pass, which links the valley to the canton of Graubünden. Historically the main settlement of the region, it features traditional stone architecture, including the typical slab-roofed houses found throughout Ticino's alpine valleys. The parish church and surrounding hamlets reflect a well-preserved rural heritage. The village serves as a popular starting point for summer hikes towards the surrounding alpine pastures and mountain lakes, as well as for reaching the Campra plateau, known for cross-country and downhill skiing at the Nara ski area in winter. The Blenio valley is also noted for its alpine dairy products, particularly cheeses made in the neighbouring pastures. The Brenno river, which flows through the valley, has its source not far from the village. Olivone thus offers an unspoilt natural setting of forests, meadows and peaks, characteristic of Ticino's remote valleys, where a Mediterranean climate meets harsher alpine influences.
