Brissago

Brissago is a village in the canton of Ticino, in Italian-speaking Switzerland, set on the shores of Lake Maggiore close to the Italian border and not far from Locarno and Ascona. The area enjoys a mild microclimate that supports Mediterranean-style vegetation, including palm trees, camellias and subtropical plants, particularly visible on the Isole di Brissago, two small islands home to a botanical garden noted for its wide variety of species. Brissago is also historically known for cigar-making, a craft tradition that shaped the local economy for several decades. The lakeside promenade offers pleasant walks with views over the surrounding mountains and the Italian shores of Lake Maggiore. The region is well suited to sailing, swimming and walking or cycling along the waterfront. The temperate climate, milder than in much of Switzerland, draws visitors throughout the year, particularly in spring and summer. The village retains a distinctly Ticinese character, with narrow lanes and houses featuring colourful façades typical of the region.
