Amden

Amden is a mountain village in the canton of St. Gallen, perched on a sunny plateau overlooking Lake Walenstadt (Walensee), facing the Churfirsten mountain range. Sitting at around 900 metres above sea level, this balcony-like position makes it popular for its panoramic views over the lake and surrounding peaks. In winter, the resort offers a family-friendly ski area around Arvenbüel, with alpine ski runs, lifts and sledging tracks, as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. In summer, the village serves as a starting point for numerous hiking routes, including trails towards the Leistchamm summit or along the Churfirsten ridge, showcasing landscapes typical of eastern Switzerland. Amden has retained a rural character, with traditional chalets and a peaceful atmosphere, set apart from the bustle of larger tourist resorts. The area is also known for its local dairy produce and crafts linked to mountain farming. Access is via Weesen, on the lakeshore, along a winding mountain road that already offers fine views over Lake Walenstadt before reaching the village.
