Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a village in the Jungfrau region of the Bernese Oberland, set within a steep-sided valley known for its dramatic rock faces and roughly sixty waterfalls, including the well-known Staubbach Falls visible from the village centre. The Trümmelbach Falls, fed by glacial meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, flow inside the mountain itself and can be explored via purpose-built galleries. The village serves as a gateway to the car-free hamlets of Mürren and Wengen, as well as the Schilthorn summit, all reached by cogwheel train or cable car. The surrounding area offers extensive hiking trails with views over the neighbouring peaks, along with paragliding, which is popular due to the valley's striking vertical drops. Traditional wooden chalets, mountain farming and surrounding pastureland reflect the classic character of the Bernese Oberland. The alpine climate brings mild summers well suited to walking and snowy winters geared towards winter sports, particularly around the resort of Mürren.
