Rattendorf / Jenig

Rattendorf and Jenig are two small villages in the Gail Valley, in the southern Austrian region of Carinthia, close to the Italian border. They lie within the Carnic Alps (Karnische Alpen), a range known for its hiking trails and unspoilt landscapes. The nearby village of Kötschach-Mauthen serves as the local hub for shops and services. The area's proximity to the Nassfeld ski resort, one of Carinthia's largest, makes it a popular destination for alpine and cross-country skiing in winter, as well as hiking and mountain biking during the summer months. The nearby Pressegger See lake offers swimming and water sports in warmer weather. The region retains a strong rural character, with traditional farmhouses, alpine meadows and architecture typical of the Carinthian valleys. The alpine climate, with snowy winters and mild summers, supports year-round outdoor tourism. Rattendorf and Jenig therefore serve as quiet starting points for exploring the Carnic Alps and the Gail Valley, away from the busier tourist centres.
