Aggsbach Markt

Aggsbach Markt is a village in Lower Austria, situated on the right bank of the Danube within the Wachau valley, a wine-growing region listed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. The village is known for its former Carthusian monastery, the Kartause Aggsbach, a Gothic charterhouse founded in the 14th century that reflects the valley's religious heritage. The surrounding landscape features vineyard slopes producing Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, alongside apricot orchards characteristic of the area. The Danube provides an ideal setting for cycling along the well-known Wachau cycle path between Melk and Krems, as well as for river cruises. The village serves as a convenient base for visiting the nearby Melk Abbey and exploring neighbouring wine villages such as Spitz and Dürnstein. The overall atmosphere remains rural and peaceful, with a few guesthouses and Heurige wine taverns offering local produce.
