Zillis

Zillis is a village in the canton of Graubünden, located in the Schams valley in eastern Switzerland. The village is best known for its Church of St Martin, which houses a remarkable Romanesque painted ceiling made up of 153 panels depicting biblical scenes, regarded as one of the oldest and most complete of its kind in Europe. This heritage attracts visitors with an interest in medieval art and religious history. The village itself is modest in size and retains the rural character typical of the Graubünden region, surrounded by mountains and alpine scenery characteristic of this part of Switzerland. The Schams valley, where Zillis is situated, offers good opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking in summer and winter sports at nearby resorts. Its proximity to major routes connecting northern and southern Switzerland, notably via the Splügen Pass, also makes it a stopover point for travellers crossing the Alps.
