Abtenau

Abtenau is a mountain market town in the Tennengau region of Salzburg province, nestled in the Lammer valley at the foot of the Tennengebirge massif. Sitting at around 700 metres above sea level, this traditional Alpine village retains a genuine character, with a baroque parish church and flower-adorned houses typical of the Salzkammergut area. The town forms part of the Ski amadé network, offering downhill skiing in winter alongside extensive cross-country trails and snowshoeing paths. In summer, Abtenau serves as a popular base for mountain hiking, with routes leading up to the alpine pastures of the Tennengebirge and its characteristic limestone scenery, part of the Northern Limestone Alps. Cycling and valley mountain biking are also common pursuits here. The surrounding region is known for its artisanal dairy produce and mountain cheese, reflecting a still-active Alpine farming tradition. Overall, Abtenau retains the feel of an authentic rural village, quieter than the larger ski resorts nearby, appreciated for its peaceful atmosphere and well-preserved natural surroundings.
