Sankt Anton am Arlberg

Sankt Anton am Arlberg is a well-known winter sports resort in Tyrol, Austria, set in the Arlberg valley at around 1,300 metres above sea level. Regarded as the birthplace of modern alpine skiing thanks to Hannes Schneider, who pioneered ski technique in the 1920s, the village forms part of the Arlberg ski area, one of the largest in Austria, linked to the resorts of Lech, Zürs, Stuben and St Christoph. The area offers challenging runs, particularly around the Valluga and Galzig peaks, popular with experienced skiers, alongside gentler terrain near Rendl and Nasserein. The resort is also known for its lively après-ski scene, with numerous bars and traditional venues throughout the village. In summer, the surrounding mountains are well suited to hiking and mountain biking, with access made easier by the Arlberg road tunnel and the village's railway station. Traditional Tyrolean architecture, featuring timber chalets, characterises the village centre, which is surrounded by peaks rising above 2,800 metres.
