Stalden

Stalden is a village in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, situated at the confluence of the Saas Vispa and Zermatt Vispa rivers in the Mattertal valley. Its location makes it a strategic junction, where the road splits towards the Saas valley and the route leading to Zermatt. The village retains a historic centre with traditional dark-timber houses set on stone bases, typical of Valais architecture. The area enjoys a dry, sunny climate, enhanced by a foehn effect, which has favoured the cultivation of apricot trees on the surrounding slopes, a local speciality well known throughout the canton. Footpaths wind through the orchards, offering views towards the surrounding mountains, including glimpses of peaks associated with the Mattertal valley. Stalden serves as a convenient base for exploring the valley at a quieter pace than the neighbouring resorts, while remaining close to both Saas-Fee and Zermatt. The setting is shaped by active mountain agriculture and genuine built heritage, offering a contrast to the busier atmosphere of larger alpine resorts.
