Schmitten

Schmitten is a village in the canton of Graubünden, located in the Albula valley near Tiefencastel and the Savognin ski resort. Sitting at around 1,200 metres above sea level, it lies along the road leading to the Julier Pass, in an alpine setting marked by wooded slopes and pastures typical of the region. The village retains traditional stone-and-timber houses, characteristic of the rural architecture found throughout the Albula valley. Its location makes it a convenient base for summer walking on trails connecting neighbouring hamlets, as well as for winter activities thanks to the nearby Savognin ski area, just a short drive away. The surrounding Surses region is known for its tranquillity, unspoilt mountain scenery and contrasting alpine climate, with mild summers and snowy winters well suited to winter sports. Schmitten therefore offers a quiet starting point for exploring the Albula valley, combining nature, traditional Grisons heritage and easy access to the tourist facilities of nearby villages.
