Savièse

Savièse is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Valais, set on a sunny hillside above the Rhône valley, just a few kilometres from Sion. The village comprises several traditional hamlets, including Chandolin and Drône, known for their timber houses built on stone stilts, originally designed to keep granaries safe from rodents. The area is crossed by a network of 'bisses', historic irrigation channels that wind along the hillside and now serve as popular walking routes, offering open views over the Valais Alps and the Diablerets massif. Terraced vineyards cover part of the land, benefiting from the dry, sunny climate typical of central Valais. Savièse enjoys a convenient location for exploring nearby Sion, the cantonal capital, while retaining a rural, mountainous character. Outdoor activities are plentiful throughout the year, from walking and mountain biking to easy access to ski areas in winter. The municipality therefore makes a peaceful base for discovering Valais's rural heritage and the surrounding alpine landscape.
