San Bernardino

San Bernardino is a village located in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, at the foot of the San Bernardino Pass, at an altitude of around 1,600 metres. This alpine settlement has traditionally served as a crossing point between northern and southern Switzerland, linking the Hinterrhein valley with Ticino. Surrounded by peaks and coniferous forests, the area offers an unspoilt natural setting well suited to outdoor pursuits. In winter, the San Bernardino ski resort provides slopes for various skill levels, along with opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, in a quieter setting than larger alpine resorts. During summer, the village serves as a popular starting point for hiking, with a network of trails leading to alpine lakes and surrounding pastures. The pass itself, closed during winter months, offers striking views over the Graubünden Alps in the warmer season. Local architecture reflects the traditional style of Swiss mountain villages, featuring wooden and stone chalets. The nearby motorway tunnel also ensures year-round access to this remote yet well-connected region.
