Saas-Grund

Saas-Grund is a mountain village in the canton of Valais, located in the Saas Valley near Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell, beneath the Weissmies and Fletschhorn massifs. The village serves as a popular starting point for hikers and mountaineers, thanks in particular to the cable car leading up to Kreuzboden and onward to Hohsaas, which sits at over 3,200 metres and offers sweeping views of the surrounding glaciers and the Dom, the highest peak located entirely within Switzerland. The area is also known for its mountain biking trails and dedicated bike park. The village retains a traditional Valais character, with wooden chalets and a village church. Saas-Grund is also home to a small museum dedicated to aviator Oskar Bider, who was born in the valley. Surrounded by peaks frequently exceeding 4,000 metres, the alpine setting supports year-round outdoor activities, from hiking and climbing in summer to skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Local dairy products, such as Mutschli cheese, are among the regional specialities found in village shops and markets.
