Matrei am Brenner

Matrei am Brenner is a village in the Austrian Tyrol, located in the Wipptal valley along the Sill River and the historic Brenner route, which has linked North Tyrol with Italy since ancient times. The village lies at the foot of the Stubai Alps, with peaks such as the Serles rising above the surrounding landscape. Trautson Castle, a notable piece of local history, can also be found here. Its position has long made Matrei am Brenner a natural crossing point between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass, now served by motorway and rail links. The mountainous setting offers plenty of scope for summer hiking, with access to side valleys and alpine pastures, as well as winter activities thanks to nearby ski resorts in the Stubaital and Wipptal regions. The climate is typically alpine, with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The village retains a quiet, rural character and is well regarded as a base for exploring the Tyrolean Alps, while still being within easy reach of Innsbruck, the regional capital, around thirty kilometres away.
