Bivio

Bivio is a village in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, situated at around 1,769 metres above sea level, at the historic crossroads of the Julier and Septimer passes. Part of the Surses region (formerly Oberhalbstein), the village has long served as a strategic trading route between northern and southern Alps, which explains the coexistence of German, Italian and Romansh-speaking communities. In winter, Bivio is valued for its cross-country skiing, with several kilometres of groomed trails through the valley, as well as off-piste skiing and freeriding, thanks to generally reliable snow cover and varied terrain. In summer, the village serves as a starting point for walking and mountain biking routes across the surrounding alpine pastures and towards neighbouring passes. The setting remains distinctly mountainous and sparsely built up, featuring traditional Engadine-style architecture. Its location between the Engadine valley and the Hinterrhein valley makes it a natural stopover on alpine routes linking several valleys within Graubünden. The climate is typically alpine, with cold, snowy winters and short but sunny summers.
