Alvaneu

Alvaneu is a village in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, located in the Albula valley near Filisur. The locality is divided into two parts, Alvaneu Dorf and Alvaneu Bad, the latter historically known for its sulphur springs, which once supported a small thermal spa. The village is served by the Albula line of the Rhaetian Railway, a stretch listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Bernina line, providing scenic rail access to St Moritz and Chur through dramatic tunnels and viaducts. The surrounding mountains offer numerous hiking trails in summer, while nearby ski areas in Graubünden draw winter sports enthusiasts. The region retains a traditional alpine character, with timber and stone houses typical of the valley. Alvaneu makes for a peaceful base from which to explore the Albula valley, combining railway heritage, unspoilt alpine scenery and rural tranquillity, away from the busier resorts of Davos or St Moritz nearby.
