Niederau

Niederau is a village in the Austrian region of Tyrol, part of the municipality of Wildschönau, a valley known for its unspoilt rural character and lush alpine scenery. The village lies on a plateau surrounded by meadows and woodland, featuring traditional Tyrolean wooden chalets with flower-decked balconies. In winter, Niederau serves as one of the gateways to the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, which links several resorts and offers downhill runs, cross-country trails and winter walking paths. During summer, the area draws hikers and mountain bikers, with a network of marked trails crossing alpine pastures and surrounding peaks rising above 1,900 metres. Wildschönau is also known for its farming heritage, particularly dairy production and artisan cheese-making, as well as the cultivation of the Krautinger, a local turnip variety. The mountain continental climate brings snowy winters well suited to winter sports and mild summers ideal for outdoor pursuits. Niederau remains a family-friendly destination, valued for its authentic atmosphere and unspoilt natural surroundings, away from the bustle of larger alpine resorts.
