Vigneulles-les-Hattonchatel

Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel is a village in the Meuse department, in the Lorraine region of north-eastern France, formed in 1973 through the merger of Vigneulles and Hattonchâtel. The latter, perched on a rocky outcrop, is home to a château restored in the early twentieth century thanks to the patronage of American benefactor Belle Skinner, as well as a collegiate church housing works attributed to the Lorraine sculptor Ligier Richier. The surrounding area, shaped by First World War fighting around the Saint-Mihiel salient, retains numerous memorials and historic sites nearby. The rural Lorraine landscape combines orchards, notably mirabelle plum trees, woodland and farmland, making it a quiet base for walking and countryside pursuits.
