Wagrain

Wagrain is a village in the Pongau region of Salzburg province, Austria, sitting at around 800 metres above sea level. It forms part of the Ski amadé network, one of Austria's largest linked ski areas, making it a popular base for winter holidays, with direct slope access connecting Wagrain to Flachau, Alpendorf and Kleinarl. In summer, the village serves as a starting point for hiking and mountain biking, thanks to a network of marked trails crossing alpine meadows and mountain woodland. The village centre retains a traditional Austrian character, with typical timber houses and its parish church. Wagrain is also known as the birthplace of writer Franz Karl Ginzkey. The resort offers family-friendly facilities, including beginner ski areas and outdoor activities for children. The surrounding countryside provides classic alpine scenery, with views across the Salzburg mountain ranges. Local cuisine features traditional Austrian mountain specialities such as Knödel dumplings and regional cheese dishes.
