Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal

Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal is a mountain village at the head of the Pitztal valley in Austrian Tyrol, sitting at around 1,400 metres above sea level. It serves as the gateway to the Pitztal Glacier and its cable car, which climbs towards the area near the Wildspitze, Austria's second-highest peak. The village is recognised as a mountaineering village, offering direct access to glacier skiing available for much of the year, as well as numerous hiking trails in summer. Nearby, Lake Rifflsee, reachable by chairlift from a neighbouring village, adds further options for day trips in the surrounding area. The setting is defined by unspoilt alpine scenery, with peaks frequently exceeding 3,000 metres, alpine pastures, mountain streams and larch woodland typical of Tyrol. The village retains traditional Tyrolean architecture, including timber farmhouses and chalets, and offers accommodation suited to ski holidays, hiking trips or quieter mountain breaks. Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal appeals for its relative tranquillity compared with more built-up resorts in the region, while still providing year-round access to mountain activities.
