A sub-prefecture of the Vosges department in the Grand Est region, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges lies in the Meurthe valley, at the foot of the Vosges mountains. The town is historically noted for its connection to the name “America”, first recorded in 1507 in a work printed at the local Gymnase Vosgien. Rebuilt after wartime destruction in the Second World War, it now blends modern architecture with older heritage, including its cathedral and adjoining Gothic cloister, one of the few of its kind in France. Each year, the town hosts the International Geography Festival, drawing researchers and enthusiasts interested in world exploration and mapping. The Pierre-Noël Museum houses collections related to regional history and geography. The surrounding mountainous landscape offers plenty of opportunities for walking, mountain biking and, in winter, skiing in the Vosges massif. With dense forests and rivers nearby, it makes a practical base for exploring the natural surroundings while enjoying modest but functional urban amenities, suited to a quiet provincial stay.
