Bar le duc

Bar-le-Duc, the county town of the Meuse department, is made up of two distinct areas: the Ville Haute, a Renaissance quarter perched on a rocky spur, and the more commercial Ville Basse, running along the Ornain river. The Ville Haute retains remarkable architectural heritage, with its stone townhouses and the Church of Saint-Étienne, home to the sculpted skeleton known as the 'Transi', a work attributed to Ligier Richier. The Barrois Museum, housed in the former castle of the Dukes of Bar, traces the region's history. The town is also known for a local culinary speciality, seedless redcurrant jam prepared by hand using a traditional quill-based method. Bar-le-Duc enjoys a semi-continental climate, with moderately warm summers and cool winters.
