Sampigny

Sampigny is a village in the Meuse department, in the Grand Est region of France, situated in the Meuse valley near Saint-Mihiel. It is chiefly known as the birthplace of Raymond Poincaré, President of the French Republic in the early twentieth century. The château park, laid out on the site of the family's former home destroyed during the First World War, now houses the Raymond Poincaré Museum, dedicated to the statesman's life and to local history. The landscaped grounds, with their mature trees and river views, make for a pleasant stroll. The surrounding area, marked by fighting during the Great War, retains numerous remains and memorial sites, particularly around Saint-Mihiel and its preserved trenches. Sampigny enjoys a semi-continental climate typical of Lorraine, with mild summers and cool winters. The village serves as a convenient base for exploring rural Meuse heritage, walking routes along the river, and historic sites connected to the First World War, all within a quiet, uncrowded setting away from the main tourist trails.
