Artenay

Artenay is a small town in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, located around twenty kilometres north of Orléans, in the heart of the Beauce plain. This agricultural area, often referred to as France's breadbasket, is characterised by vast cereal fields and a landscape typical of rural central France. Artenay has long served as a stopping point on the old road linking Paris and Orléans, giving it a historic role as a coaching town over the centuries. The town is linked to an episode of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, a battle having taken place here. It still retains a windmill, a reminder of the region's historic grain-growing activity. The surrounding countryside is well suited to simple outdoor pursuits, such as walks through the Beauce farmland or visits to nearby villages. Artenay can also serve as a convenient base for exploring Orléans and the Loire Valley, roughly a thirty-minute drive away. Local life remains shaped by the agricultural calendar and a quiet atmosphere, making it a peaceful choice away from the main tourist routes.
