Cayres

Cayres is a village in the Haute-Loire department of the Auvergne region, set on the volcanic Devès plateau, just a few kilometres from Le Puy-en-Velay. This upland rural area, shaped by ancient volcanic cones known as puys, offers a peaceful setting well suited to walking and exploring the Auvergne countryside. The region is crossed by the Way of St James, the via Podiensis, which draws walkers and pilgrims throughout the year. Cayres lies close to Le Puy-en-Velay, a town renowned for its Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe chapel and the Notre-Dame de France statue, all notable landmarks of the Velay area. The Devès plateau is also known for its pastures and woodland, as well as for the local Puy green lentil, which holds a protected designation of origin. The climate is upland in character, with cool winters and mild summers, ideal for outdoor activities. Cayres therefore makes a quiet base from which to discover the natural and cultural heritage of Haute-Loire, combining volcanic landscapes, local produce and scenic walking routes.
