Freycenet la cuche

Freycenet-la-Cuche is a small rural commune in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, located within the Velay area, close to the Meygal massif and just a few kilometres from Le Puy-en-Velay. The village sits at altitude, within a mid-mountain landscape characterised by extensive fir and pine forests typical of this volcanic corner of the Velay. The climate is cool, with harsh, often snowy winters, making the surrounding area well suited to snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, particularly around the neighbouring commune of Les Estables, known for its high elevation. In summer, the area draws walkers thanks to a network of paths crossing woodland and pastures, with views over the distinctive volcanic peaks, or 'sucs', that shape the local scenery. Regional food traditions centre on produce such as the Puy green lentil, a protected variety grown on the nearby plain. Le Puy-en-Velay, a heritage town known for its cathedral and volcanic rock formations, is easily reached as a day trip from the village.
