Le chambon sur lignon

Le Chambon-sur-Lignon is a village in the Haute-Loire department, set on the Vivarais-Lignon plateau at an altitude of around 1,000 metres. This rural area, with its mountain climate and harsh winters, is known for its distinctive history: during the Second World War, the local population sheltered and protected numerous refugees, including Jewish children, earning the village official recognition as Righteous Among the Nations. The Lieu de Mémoire, open to visitors, documents this period and stands as the village's principal cultural site. The town retains an authentic character with its granite houses and quiet atmosphere, typical of the Protestant villages of the Cévennes region. The surrounding countryside, a mix of fir forests and pastureland, is well suited to walking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter, with the plateau offering marked trails. The Lignon river, which flows through the village, adds to the peaceful setting. Le Chambon-sur-Lignon also serves as a good base for exploring the nearby Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park, in an unspoilt and relatively untouristy setting.
