Le monastier sur gazeille

Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille is a village in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, set on the Velay plateau near the Mézenc massif. The village is best known for its Saint-Chaffre Abbey, a Romanesque building whose history dates back to the early Middle Ages, reflecting the area's rich monastic heritage. Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille is also notable as the starting point of the Stevenson Trail (GR70), the route taken by Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson in 1878 during his journey through the Cévennes with a donkey, an experience later recounted in his travel narrative. The village has also maintained a traditional craft linked to cutlery-making. Surrounded by mid-mountain scenery, meadows and woodland, the area is well suited to walking, particularly along the trails of the Velay and Mézenc regions. The climate is mountainous, with cool winters and mild summers, ideal for outdoor pursuits. This modest-sized village offers the quiet, traditional atmosphere typical of rural Haute-Loire, away from the main tourist routes.
