Les estables

Les Estables is a village in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne region, well known for being one of the coldest places in mainland France during winter. Sitting at over 1,350 metres above sea level, at the foot of Mont Mézenc, it serves as a popular starting point for summer hiking and winter snow activities, including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The village is surrounded by the volcanic landscapes typical of the Massif Central, offering views over the surrounding peaks and the vast upland pastures where livestock graze in summer. The area is also known for its local cheeses and traditional cured meats, as well as its long-distance walking trails, including sections of the GR7 and GR400 that pass through the region. The harsh climate, with heavy snowfall and some of the lowest winter temperatures in the country, strongly shapes the character of the place.
