Saugues

Saugues is a small town in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne region, set on the Margeride plateau at around 1,000 metres above sea level. The town is known for its historical association with the legend of the Beast of Gévaudan, recalled through a dedicated museum and occasional local events. Its heritage includes the Tour des Anglais, a medieval keep overlooking the town centre, along with several old houses and a church. Saugues lies along the Stevenson Trail (GR70), making it a popular stopover for walkers crossing the Margeride towards the Cévennes. The surrounding countryside features forests, pastureland and unspoilt scenery, ideal for walking and observing local wildlife, including herds of Aubrac cattle. The climate is typically mountainous, with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The area retains a strong agricultural tradition, and local produce includes Puy green lentils, grown not far away. Saugues offers a quiet base for exploring the southern part of the Haute-Loire, appealing to those seeking rural surroundings, hiking opportunities and a slower pace of life away from busier tourist areas.
