Rauret

Rauret is a small hamlet within the commune of Saugues, in the Haute-Loire department, nestled in the Margeride mountains in the southern part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This rural area, characterised by mid-mountain landscapes, pine forests and pastureland, offers a peaceful and unspoilt setting, well suited to hiking and nature exploration. The region is crossed by the Way of St James (GR65, Via Podiensis), which passes through Saugues, a historic stop for pilgrims. The area is also known for its connection to the legend of the Beast of Gévaudan, which marked local history in the 18th century and whose traces can still be found in the collective memory and cultural heritage of Saugues. The climate is mountainous, with cold, snowy winters and mild summers, making it ideal for outdoor pursuits such as walking, mountain biking or cross-country skiing depending on the season. Rauret thus serves as a quiet starting point for exploring the Margeride, its characterful volcanic stone villages, and its vast unspoilt natural spaces, away from the tourist crowds.
