Lavaudieu

Lavaudieu is a village in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne region, recognised as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. It grew up around a Benedictine abbey founded in the 11th century, whose Romanesque cloister — one of the few still standing in Auvergne — and medieval refectory frescoes are its main historical features. Cobbled lanes, volcanic stone houses and remnants of old ramparts reflect the village's long history. The Senouire, a small river running through the village, adds to its peaceful setting, ideal for gentle walks. The surrounding countryside is rural and hilly, typical of the Livradois-Forez area, with mid-mountain landscapes and some remaining agricultural activity. Lavaudieu lies close to Brioude and Le Puy-en-Velay, making it a worthwhile stop on a regional tour focused on Romanesque heritage and characterful villages.
