Mautern an der Donau

Mautern an der Donau is a small town in Lower Austria, situated on the southern bank of the Danube, directly opposite Krems, at the heart of the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley. The site occupies the location of the former Roman fort of Favianis, and remnants of its fortifications remain visible in the historic centre. Nearby stands Göttweig Abbey, a Benedictine monastery perched on a hill, noted for its baroque architecture and views over the valley. The region is renowned for winemaking, with grape varieties such as Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grown on the surrounding slopes, as well as for apricot cultivation, a signature crop of the Wachau. The Danube and its cycle path (Donauradweg) run through the town, providing direct access to neighbouring villages such as Dürnstein and Melk. The mild, dry Pannonian-influenced summer climate favours outdoor pursuits like hiking, cycling and visits to local wine cellars. Mautern offers a peaceful base for exploring the Wachau Valley, combining historical heritage, vineyard scenery and riverside surroundings.
