Kals am Großglockner

Kals am Großglockner is a village in East Tyrol, Austria, set at the foot of the Großglockner, the country's highest peak at 3,798 metres. It serves as one of the main starting points for climbing the mountain, particularly via the Lucknerhaus and Lucknerhütte, well-known bases for mountaineers. Bordering the Hohe Tauern National Park, the surrounding area offers unspoilt alpine scenery, ideal for summer hiking across pastures, coniferous forests and glaciers. In winter, the Kals-Matrei ski area, linked by a network of lifts, draws skiers and ski tourers with slopes suited to various levels. The village retains a traditional Tyrolean character, with timber-built farmhouses and its own parish church. Regional cuisine features Austrian specialities such as Kaiserschmarrn and Knödel, often served in mountain inns. Kals am Großglockner remains a relatively unspoilt destination, quieter than many other alpine resorts, valued for its mountain setting and year-round outdoor activities, from climbing and hiking to skiing and touring.
