Orth an der Donau

Orth an der Donau is a municipality in Lower Austria, located in the Marchfeld region right on the banks of the Danube. It is best known for hosting the Donau-Auen National Park visitor centre, housed within Orth Castle, which showcases the flora and fauna of this protected floodplain, one of the last major wetland areas in Central Europe. The medieval-origin castle itself stands as a notable landmark in the flat Marchfeld landscape. The area is well suited to outdoor pursuits, including walking, birdwatching and cycling along riverside paths that form part of the route linking Vienna and Bratislava. The surrounding environment features riparian forests, old river branches and rich biodiversity, attracting beavers, deer and numerous waterfowl species. Being only around thirty kilometres from Vienna, Orth an der Donau makes an easy day-trip destination while still offering the tranquillity of rural Marchfeld countryside. The region has a continental climate, with warm summers and cooler winters, supporting a range of seasonal activities throughout the year for those exploring the Danube floodplain.
