Mondsee

Mondsee is a small town in Upper Austria, set on the lake of the same name in the Salzkammergut region, roughly 30 kilometres from Salzburg. The town is known for St Michael's Basilica, whose façade featured in a scene from "The Sound of Music". The historic centre, with its square lined by colourful houses and pedestrian lanes, is pleasant to wander through and home to several cafés and shops. Lake Mondsee, often noted as one of the warmer lakes in the region during summer, is suited to swimming, sailing, paddleboarding and fishing, while the surrounding hills offer walking trails and cycling routes. The area is also known for producing Mondseer cheese. In winter, a Christmas market brings life to the main square. Mondsee makes a convenient base for exploring the Salzkammergut, with its mix of lakes, mountains and traditional villages, while remaining easily reachable from Salzburg or Vienna via regional road and rail links.
