St-Benoit-du-Sault

Saint-Benoît-du-Sault is a medieval village in the southern Indre department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Portefeuille river valley, it retains the remains of its former Benedictine priory, founded in the 11th century by monks from Saint-Cyprien de Poitiers, along with a Romanesque church and fragments of its old ramparts, including a fortified gateway. The cobbled lanes, lined with granite houses and old turrets, reflect its fortified past. The village is also known for its resident craftspeople and painters, based in historic buildings, giving it a reputation as something of an artists' village. The surrounding rural landscape, characterised by hedgerow farmland and wooded valleys along the Indre, is well suited to walking and exploring the local countryside. The climate is a mild, semi-oceanic type typical of central France, with gentle summers and moderate winters.
