Retournac

Retournac is a small town in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, nestled on the banks of the Loire River amid mid-mountain scenery, roughly halfway between Le Puy-en-Velay and Aurec-sur-Loire. The town lies within the Loire gorges, an area characterised by wooded hills and steep valleys well suited to walking and nature exploration. The river provides a pleasant setting for riverside strolls. The town retains rural architecture typical of the Velay area, with houses built from local volcanic stone. Retournac is home to a small eco-museum dedicated to nature and beekeeping, reflecting the area's traditional rural activities. The surrounding countryside is known for growing the Puy green lentil, a speciality with protected designation of origin status. The climate is semi-mountainous, with mild summers and cooler winters due to the area's moderate altitude. Retournac makes a quiet base for exploring the Haute-Loire, combining unspoilt nature, rural heritage and local produce, away from the busier tourist towns of the region.
