Eguzon-Chantome

Eguzon-Chantôme is a village in the southern Indre department, in the Berry region, best known for the Chambon lake, a reservoir created by the Eguzon hydroelectric dam built on the Creuse river in the early twentieth century. This expanse of water, one of the largest in central France, offers swimming, sailing, canoeing and fishing, with several beaches open during the summer season. The village retains a twelfth-century keep housing the Creuse Valley Museum, which traces local history and traditional rural life in Berry. The surrounding area lies within the so-called Painters' Valley, a stretch of the Creuse valley admired for landscapes that inspired numerous artists in the nineteenth century, making it well suited to walking and exploring small stone-built villages. The climate is a modified oceanic type, with mild summers favouring outdoor pursuits. The village itself offers a handful of shops, restaurants and places to stay geared towards nature-based, low-key tourism, set within a typical rural landscape of central France, away from urban bustle.
