Epineuil le Fleuriel

Epineuil-le-Fleuriel is a small village in the Berry region, in the Cher department, close to the Vallée Noire. It is best known for its connection to the writer Alain-Fournier, who spent his childhood here while his father worked as a schoolteacher in the village school. This school, largely preserved in its original state, has been turned into a museum and offers insight into the setting that inspired his novel "Le Grand Meaulnes", with the village believed to have been the model for the fictional town of Sainte-Agathe. The surrounding countryside, with its hedgerows, meadows and small streams typical of the Berry region, makes for pleasant walking and exploration of local heritage. Nearby, visitors can also discover other sites linked to the author, such as La Chapelle-d'Angillon, his birthplace. The village retains traditional rural architecture, with stone houses and tiled roofs characteristic of the area.
