Argenton-sur-Creuse

Argenton-sur-Creuse is a town in the Indre department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, set along the banks of the Creuse river. Nicknamed the 'Venice of Berry', it owes this name to its old houses built on stilts along the riverside, best seen from the Vieux Pont, which offers a distinctive view over the historic centre. The Notre-Dame-des-Grâces chapel, perched on a hill, overlooks the town and provides a vantage point across the valley. The Museum of Shirt-Making and Men's Elegance reflects the town's industrial past, as Argenton was once an important centre for shirt manufacturing during the 19th and 20th centuries. The 19th-century covered market still brings life to the town centre on market days. The Saint-Étienne district, with its cobbled lanes and timber-framed houses, adds to the local architectural heritage. The surrounding Creuse valley lends itself to outdoor pursuits such as walking, fishing and canoeing.
