Schwaz

Schwaz is a town in the Austrian Tyrol, located in the Inn Valley, around thirty kilometres east of Innsbruck. Its history is closely tied to silver and copper mining, which made it one of the wealthiest towns in Central Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. This heritage is still visible in the historic centre, dominated by the impressive parish church with one of the largest copper roofs in Europe, as well as by Freundsberg Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the town. The Schwaz silver mine, now open to visitors, offers a glimpse into the underground galleries and the area's mining past. The surrounding mountain scenery, with the Tuxer Alps to the south and the Kellerjoch peak in the background, provides an ideal setting for hiking in summer and winter sports, thanks to its proximity to the Zillertal and Tuxertal valleys. Schwaz's location makes it a convenient base for exploring the Tyrol region, combining historical sightseeing with outdoor activities, all within an alpine climate of mild summers and cold, snowy winters.
